Fitness experts across Canada are predicting significant changes in the fitness industry. According to the canfitpro Fitness Trends Survey, the focus is shifting. Now, there's more emphasis on aging well, mental wellbeing, active recovery, and social connection. This survey included responses from over 1,000 fitness professionals.

“We’ve seen a shift in how people think about and engage with fitness. It’s no longer just about crushing your workout goals. Now more people are prioritizing fitness and active recovery to improve their physical and mental health and enjoy their lives more,” said Maureen ‘Mo’ Hagan, COO of canfitpro. “Fitness professionals are adapting and expanding their training to support and encourage their clients to make the most of their fitness routines.”

The survey highlights five key trends set to dominate the Canadian fitness scene in 2024. First, there's a growing emphasis on active aging and training for older adults, focusing on maintaining mobility and independence in later years. Younger generations are also showing interest in this approach, recognizing the long-term benefits of maintaining fitness throughout life. Functional fitness continues to be a top trend, with exercises designed to improve stability and balance for everyday activities. Additionally, there's an increasing focus on mental health, mindfulness, and stress reduction, acknowledging the important connection between physical activity and mental well-being. Another significant trend is the shift towards active recovery and regeneration, moving away from high-intensity regimes to include rest and recuperation as essential components of fitness routines.

In group fitness, there's a rising demand for unique and specialized classes. These classes blend effective workout techniques with dynamic music and social interaction, catering to a diverse range of preferences and fitness goals.

As the Canadian fitness industry stands on the threshold of these transformative trends, it is clear that the future of fitness is not just about physical strength or endurance. It's about fostering a comprehensive wellness culture that integrates physical activity with mental health, community engagement, and a sustainable approach to lifelong fitness.
