American Poison Centers have reported an increase in overdose cases related to weight loss medications like Ozempic® and Wegovy®, which contain semaglutide. These medications, initially developed for type 2 diabetes management, have gained popularity for weight loss. However, the uptick in usage has heightened concerns about safety and the potential risks of overdose.

Oprah's recent revelation in People magazine about using weight loss medications has drawn increased attention to these drugs. This uptick is especially noteworthy as fitness companies start to include these medications in their services. For example, Life Time's President revealed on CNBC a pilot program to incorporate weight loss drugs into members' fitness plans. Similarly, WeightWatchers and Noom have ventured into the realm of prescription obesity drugs.

Semaglutide, the active ingredient in Ozempic® and Wegovy®, works by mimicking the GLP-1 hormone, influencing insulin production and blood sugar levels. While celebrated for its weight-loss benefits, an overdose can cause serious health issues.

Data from America's Poison Centers from January to November 2023 shows at least 2,941 reported cases of semaglutide overdose, a significant increase from the previous years. Most of these cases are believed to be accidental, often due to confusion over dosing instructions or inadequate time between doses.

The actual number of overdose cases may be higher than reported, as the current data only includes incidents reported to poison control centers. The prescription rates for these medications have been rising, suggesting a potential underestimation of overdoses.

Symptoms of semaglutide overdose can mimic those of hypoglycemia, starting with increased heart rate and sweating, and in more severe cases, leading to confusion and coma.

It is crucial for individuals considering weight loss medications to consult with their doctors or healthcare professionals. Understanding the proper use, dosage, and potential adverse effects of these medications is vital for safe and effective treatment. Patients should be well-informed about the signs of overdose and the importance of following medical advice to prevent potential health risks.
