As 2025 begins, Americans are focusing on strength and recovery in their fitness routines, signaling a shift toward more sustainable health practices. A recent survey conducted by Life Time, which polled over 1,350 participants, reveals key insights into the wellness goals driving the new year.

For the third consecutive year, building muscle remains the top fitness goal, with 35% of respondents citing it as their primary focus. This continued interest in strength training reflects a broader cultural emphasis on functional fitness and long-term health benefits. High-intensity interval training (HIIT) and yoga were the next most popular forms of exercise, each selected by 20% and 18% of respondents, respectively.

Recovery-focused practices are also gaining momentum. Stretching and foam rolling were cited by 30% of participants as crucial components of their routines, underscoring the importance of balancing intense workouts with activities that promote muscle recovery and flexibility.

One of the most notable findings was the rise in sauna use, with 25% of respondents incorporating it regularly into their wellness plans. Sauna sessions have become a staple for many seeking relaxation, recovery, and cardiovascular benefits. "Incorporating time in the sauna has been a game-changer for me," said one respondent, highlighting its impact on physical and mental recovery.

Nutrition trends for 2025 also highlight a focus on holistic health. More than 40% of respondents reported prioritizing a whole-food diet while reducing processed foods. Protein remains a key dietary focus, with 50% of participants ensuring adequate intake to support muscle growth and recovery.

Technology continues to reshape the fitness landscape, with 60% of those surveyed using wearable devices or fitness apps to track their progress. These tools provide users with insights into workout performance, recovery metrics, and personalized training recommendations, making fitness goals more attainable.

Life Time’s survey paints a picture of a population dedicated to both physical and mental well-being. The rise of strength training, the popularity of saunas, and a mindful approach to nutrition suggest a shift toward a balanced and sustainable approach to fitness.

"It’s not just about looking good anymore. It’s about feeling strong, healthy, and prepared for life’s challenges," said another respondent, reflecting the evolving priorities of fitness enthusiasts.

Recovery continues to dominate as a key focus in the fitness industry, with people seeking a more well-rounded experience within their gym visits. Fitness centers are increasingly meeting this demand by integrating spaces and programs that prioritize both exercise and recovery.
