As the New Year approaches, gyms across the country are preparing for the annual influx of fitness enthusiasts. In 2025, a rising trend is clear: strength training continues to dominate. With more than 60% of individuals prioritizing weight and strength training in their routines, according to Mindbody's 2024 Wellness Trends Report, gyms are responding with targeted investments in equipment and programming.
Planet Fitness, which operates over 2,600 locations, has introduced new strength equipment to meet this demand. Additions include the Magnum Supine Bench Press, Magnum Hack Squat, and Seated Calf Machine, designed to enhance workout options for members of all fitness levels. The rollout is expected to reach nearly all locations by the end of 2025.
“Consumers are seeking more options for strength training as their fitness needs evolve,” said Jamie Medeiros, Chief Brand Officer at Planet Fitness.
Strength training's enduring popularity can be attributed to its wide-ranging benefits. Not only does it build muscle and improve bone density, but it also supports cardiovascular health and aids in weight management. These benefits appeal to a broad spectrum of individuals, from fitness newcomers looking to improve overall health to seasoned gym-goers focused on enhancing performance.
The shift toward strength training has prompted many gyms to redesign their spaces to accommodate more equipment and create functional training zones. Planet Fitness is no exception, with its recent investments reflecting the industry-wide focus on modernizing facilities to support strength-focused workouts.
The company’s new equipment rollout is part of a broader effort to make strength training accessible to all members, regardless of their fitness background. With its Judgement Free Zone ethos, Planet Fitness aims to reduce intimidation and provide a welcoming environment where members can learn and grow at their own pace.
January typically brings a surge of new gym-goers, and strength training is expected to play a significant role in 2025's fitness resolutions. Many first-time members are drawn to strength training for its versatility and visible results. For gyms like Planet Fitness, this surge represents an opportunity to introduce more people to the benefits of strength-focused routines while providing the tools and support needed to sustain long-term fitness habits.
With trends showing no signs of slowing, the emphasis on strength training is likely to shape the fitness industry’s evolution well beyond 2025, driving continued innovation and investment across gym spaces nationwide.
