Tonal has announced the appointment of Darren MacDonald as its new Chief Executive Officer and member of the Board of Directors. Darren’s appointment is effective immediately. He succeeds Krystal Zell, who is stepping down for personal reasons after serving as CEO since January 2023.

During her time at the company, Krystal Zell oversaw key financial achievements, including securing $130 million in funding. Under her leadership, Tonal reached significant operational milestones and maintained strong retention rates. Zell also helped develop new product roadmaps, including the company’s latest AI-driven personalized strength training technology.

Darren MacDonald joins Tonal with over 20 years of experience in global digital strategy and business development. He previously held senior leadership roles at Petco as Chief Customer Officer and Chief Marketing Officer, along with positions at Walmart, Jet.com, IAC, and Avery Dennison. His background in driving growth across the retail sector is expected to play a key role in Tonal’s future trajectory.

“As a user of Tonal, I understand the value the product brings to its customers,” said MacDonald. “I’m looking forward to working with the team to continue advancing personalized strength training and delivering the best experience possible.”

Tonal’s Board Chairman, Jack Lazar, expressed appreciation for Zell’s contributions and optimism about the company’s future under MacDonald’s leadership, noting his experience in retail strategy and consumer-focused growth.

Zell reflected on her tenure, stating, “It has been a privilege to lead Tonal through a pivotal period. I’m proud of what we have accomplished, and I am confident that Darren will continue to move the company forward.”
