In a world where Gen Z has become a focal point for many brands, there is an assumption that we understand the mindset of these young individuals and what truly matters to them. Gen Z is often associated with a strong sense of purpose and a desire to make a positive impact on the world. To gain a deeper understanding of their needs and aspirations, intimate health brand INTIMINA conducted a survey directly asking young girls and women from Gen Z (aged 13-20) about their perspectives on life.
Mental health and self-confidence emerged as the top priorities for Gen Z girls, with 63% and 62% respectively ranking them as essential aspects of life. This highlights the significance of mental well-being in shaping their overall quality of life. The survey revealed that these young women employ various strategies to maintain positive mental health, including talking to friends (60%), engaging with family (51%), participating in physical exercise (47%), and creative activities like art and writing (31%). Seeking professional help when needed (22%) and confiding in teachers, school counselors, or mentors (14%) are also considered helpful.
Gen Z girls acknowledge the importance of diverse sources for boosting their self-esteem and body image. They turn to friends (54%) and family members (46%) for support, find confidence in personal achievements (38%) and positive affirmations (32%), and also credit social media (26%) and role models (16%) for influencing their self-perception. While periods remain a natural part of life, the survey indicates an openness among Gen Z girls to discuss menstruation. About 22% of respondents reported that menstruation is openly discussed, and they feel comfortable talking about it with everyone. However, there is room for improvement, as 11% still consider menstruation a private matter.
The survey further highlights the types of content and support that young girls find helpful in addressing their needs and concerns. Conversations with family and friends (51%), personal stories and experiences shared by others (33%), and educational resources like books, articles, videos, or webinars (31%) are the most sought-after forms of support. Access to mental health resources and tools (27%), interactive well-being workshops or events (19%), and online forums and communities (19%) also play vital roles in addressing their needs.
The survey offers reassuring insights into the self-awareness of young women regarding the importance of self-confidence, body positivity, and mental well-being. It emphasizes the need for open discussions within families and communities to promote healthy mental health practices and positive attitudes. Encouraging a lifestyle that includes physical exercise and overall well-being is key to nurturing the growth of confident and resilient young women. As society collectively embraces these principles, we contribute to a future where Gen Z girls thrive with a genuine sense of well-being.
