Minimal Exercise Reduces Dementia Risk in Older Adults: Study

A recent study published in Scientific Reports sheds light on the significant potential of regular aerobic exercise, even in minimal amounts, to prevent cognitive decline and dementia among older adults. The research underscores the pressing need for public health policies promoting physical activity, particularly among those with degenerative conditions like osteoarthritis (OA).

Dementia affects approximately 10% of the elderly population worldwide, making its prevention a global health priority. This study reveals that the minimal amount of exercise, as little as 15 minutes a day or 90 minutes a week, can have a substantial impact on reducing dementia incidence in older adults with OA.

The findings are consistent with previous research linking physical activity, including low-intensity activities such as walking, to improved cognitive function in older adults. The study emphasizes that encouraging elderly individuals with OA to engage in even minimal physical activity can enhance both their joint and cognitive health.

While age, poor cognition, poor performance in activities of daily living, and congestive heart failure were identified as risk factors for dementia, the study reinforces the importance of integrating "walking" into daily routines to mitigate the risk of cognitive decline. This low-intensity physical activity could have profound implications for public health policies globally, potentially reducing healthcare expenses and addressing health inequalities.

However, the study acknowledges its limitations, such as a relatively small sample size and a retrospective design. Further research is needed to fully understand the mechanisms linking vascular risk factors, exercise, and dementia, paving the way for more effective preventive and treatment strategies.
