Time Warp Effect: How Physical Exercise Slows Down Our Clock

Does the clock tick differently when you exercise? Inspired by Einstein’s theory of relativity, which proposes that our perception of time can depend on our circumstances, researchers set out to explore how exercise impacts this perception. Specifically, the study investigated whether the intensity of exercise or the presence of competitors could influence how we experience time while exercising.

The study published in the journal Brain and Behavior used an innovative approach. Thirty-three recreational athletes participated in an experiment using high-tech Velotron 3D software to simulate different cycling environments. They underwent three 4-km cycling trials under varied conditions: cycling alone, cycling alongside a passive avatar, and racing against a competitive avatar. To assess changes in time perception, participants estimated 30-second intervals at multiple points before, during, and after exercising, while also rating their exertion levels.

The results were revealing. Regardless of the trial type—solo or competitive—the athletes consistently perceived time as moving slower while exercising compared to their rest periods. This sensation of prolonged time did not significantly change whether participants were alone or competing against avatars. Notably, as the physical effort increased, their perceived time stretched further, although their exertion ratings showed no direct correlation with their time estimates.

This study confirmed that the act of exercising is enough to distort our sense of time, a phenomenon that remains stable even in the presence of competition. This finding has profound implications for athletic training and competition strategies. Understanding that time feels slower during physical activity can help athletes better manage their pacing and endurance, potentially enhancing performance without the influence of psychological pressure from competitors.
