The most recent findings from the New Brunswick Student Wellness Survey are in, and they paint a concerning picture of student well-being. This comprehensive survey, conducted among 42,000 students in grades 6 to 12, delves deep into the state of student health and provides valuable insights into the challenges they face.

One of the most striking revelations from the survey is the worsening mental health of students. In the 2021-2022 academic year, a staggering 47.8% of students reported symptoms of anxiety, a significant increase from 32.6% since 2015-2016. Similarly, 41.7% of students reported experiencing symptoms of depression, marking a notable rise from 31.2% in 2015-2016.

Could Physical Activity Play a Role?

But here's where things get intriguing. Numerous studies have shown that physical activity can have a profound impact on mental well-being. Engaging in regular physical activity has been linked to reduced symptoms of anxiety and depression, improved mood, and increased self-esteem. In fact, a report from Participaction underlines the extensive benefits of physical activity for children and youth, spanning physical fitness, bone health, quality of life, and even psychological well-being.

Despite these well-documented benefits, the report paints a grim picture of physical activity levels among students. In 2021-2022, only 22.2% of students in grades 6 to 12 achieved the recommended amount of daily moderate or vigorous physical activity. To put it in perspective, that's less than a quarter of students meeting the guidelines. This is a concerning trend considering that physical activity is not only fun, but can be a crucial tool in boosting mental wellness.

The New Brunswick Student Wellness Survey reveals that the state of student well-being is at a critical juncture. The rising rates of anxiety and depression among students are deeply concerning. However, available data underscores the potential of physical activity as a powerful tool to combat these issues. By increasing physical activity opportunities for students, we can not only promote better physical health but also enhance their mental wellness. It's high time that we recognize the importance of physical activity in student well-being and take meaningful steps to ensure all students have the chance to benefit from it.
