In an unconventional move aimed at boosting employee fitness and well-being, Guangdong Dongpo Paper, a paper company based in Guangdong, China, has introduced a unique incentive system. Employees' annual bonuses are now directly linked to the number of miles they run each month, as reported in Guangzhou Daily.
According to the Guangzhou Daily, under this new initiative, the company's approximately 100 workers can earn bonus amounts equivalent to as much as 130 percent of their monthly salary if they manage to complete a minimum of 62 miles (equivalent to 100 kilometers) every month.
However, the twist in this bonus scheme lies in its flexibility. Employees who cover only half of the required distance over six consecutive months, averaging about five miles a month, will receive a different reward – a pair of running shoes. Chairman Lin Zhiyong himself is known for his passion for outdoor activities, having conquered the summit of Mount Everest twice.
As per the article, Chairman Lin explained that the company's choice to tie bonuses to running miles stemmed from their aim to encourage a healthier lifestyle among employees and enhance their overall well-being. While this innovative approach has been lauded by some, it has also sparked debate on Chinese social media platforms, with questions arising about whether the exercise-based bonus system could potentially be used to reduce or eliminate traditional bonuses. The discussion surrounding this unique employee incentive program continues to unfold in online communities.
In today's fast-paced world, employees increasingly seek companies that prioritize wellness. However, based on online backlash, it's evident that most people wouldn't want exercise to be the sole criteria for company bonuses or an excuse to scrap them. Nonetheless, the global Corporate Wellness market's substantial growth, from USD 58,635.75 million in 2021 to a projected USD 88,452.26 million by 2027 with a CAGR of 7.09%, underscores the rising importance of employee well-being and innovative approaches to promote it.
