ABC Fitness is taking a closer look at how people are engaging with fitness in 2025. The latest Q1 Wellness Watch report provides a snapshot of consumer habits, revealing steady momentum in physical activity and a shift in how individuals are interacting with gyms and wellness technology. Based on a January survey of over 2,000 active consumers, along with data from 30,000 partner clubs and 40 million members, the findings highlight notable trends shaping the industry.

Consumer activity remains on the rise, with 76% of respondents identifying as physically active—an increase of 2% year-over-year and 10% since 2021. January saw 106 million check-ins at fitness facilities and 1.9 million new memberships, marking a strong start to the year. Gym participation remains significant, with 60% of active consumers reporting that they are members of or use a gym, health club, or fitness studio, while 50% specifically work out in traditional gyms.

Exercise frequency has increased, with 44% of active consumers now exercising 12 or more times per month—an 18% jump year-over-year. This trend is more pronounced among older demographics, with 58% of Boomers reaching this threshold compared to 37% of Gen Z. Additionally, 61% of consumers report spending less than $69 per month on fitness memberships and fees, reflecting a demand for affordability in fitness options.

Technology continues to shape consumer fitness habits. The report highlights that 53% of consumers use wearables to monitor their fitness, while 63% engage with AI-based fitness tracking apps. Virtual fitness tools are also widely adopted, with 43% using virtual trainers or workout generators, and 55% relying on nutrition and meal-planning apps. Mental wellness is another growing focus, with 38% of respondents having used mental wellness apps to complement their physical activity.

Beyond gym settings, at-home and outdoor fitness routines are gaining popularity. More than 50% of consumers report working out at home, and 53% incorporate outdoor exercise into their routines. The shift aligns with a broader trend toward a holistic approach to fitness, particularly among younger generations—73% of Gen Z and 79% of Millennials consider mental and physical health equally important in their wellness journey.

As 2025 unfolds, the data suggests continued demand for flexible and technology-driven fitness experiences. Whether through gym memberships, digital tools, or hybrid workout models, consumers are prioritizing accessibility, personalization, and a well-rounded approach to fitness and wellness.
