Leadership Shakeup at WeightWatchers: Sima Sistani Departs, Tara Comonte Appointed Interim CEO

WeightWatchers announced on Friday that CEO Sima Sistani has departed from her position, effective immediately. Tara Comonte, a current board member and former executive at Shake Shack, has been appointed as Interim Chief Executive Officer.
The company did not provide specific reasons for Sistani’s sudden exit. However, Comonte’s appointment comes as WeightWatchers focuses on improving operational efficiency and financial performance. In recent months, the company has faced financial challenges, including declining profits and rising restructuring costs. The company's stock has experienced a significant decline, with shares dropping over 90% in the past year.
Sistani, who held the CEO role for over two years, was instrumental in leading WeightWatchers into the prescription drug weight-loss market. Under her leadership, the company acquired Sequence, a telehealth platform now known as WeightWatchers Clinic, for $106 million. The platform provides access to weight-loss medications, including Ozempic, Wegovy, and Trulicity, broadening the company's offerings beyond its traditional behavioral weight management programs.
Comonte steps into the role with a background in corporate leadership and finance. Her previous experience includes serving as CEO of TMRW Life Sciences and President and CFO at Shake Shack. The leadership change also accompanies a reduction in the WeightWatchers board, which has been downsized from nine to eight members.
WeightWatchers, founded over six decades ago, now faces a pivotal period as it works to stabilize its financial position and pursue new strategies for growth.
