As the U.S. presidential election on Tuesday, November 5, 2024, approaches, a new survey reveals that 83% of American adults are grappling with some level of stress, with three out of five reporting moderate to extreme anxiety about the outcome. The study, conducted by EoS Fitness, also highlights that 45% of respondents have seen their anxiety levels rise over the past two months, and 53% expect their stress to intensify as Election Day draws nearer.

The survey emphasizes that physical activity is a widely recognized method for managing election-related anxiety. An overwhelming 95% of respondents agree that exercise is a key tool for stress relief, with 72% of those experiencing the highest levels of stress reporting that regular exercise significantly helps them cope.

“As Americans experience the growing importance of this time of year, our survey finds that exercise is a healthy and effective way to manage anxiety,” said Shilpi Sullivan, Chief Marketing Officer at EoS Fitness. “Providing a welcoming space where people can relieve stress, connect with others, and improve their well-being is part of our foundation.”

The study also sheds light on the disparity between personal and perceived stress. While 80% of respondents admit to feeling stressed about the election, 93% believe others are experiencing higher levels of anxiety. Additionally, 82% of respondents rate other people's stress as moderate to extreme, which is 20% higher than their own assessment.

Joella Hopkins, Executive Vice President of Group Fitness at EoS Fitness, emphasized the benefits of exercising in a group setting. “Exercising in a group or with a partner creates a sense of community and accountability, making it easier to stay consistent,” Hopkins noted. “Sharing the experience with others helps build connections, which is incredibly powerful for mental well-being and stress management.”

The survey further revealed that those who exercise more than three times per week are 34% more likely to feel in control of their stress during this election period. Popular activities respondents use to manage their anxiety include walking, weightlifting, yoga, and active meditation.
