In a move to redefine preventive healthcare, Truemed has partnered with the global fitness brand Barry’s to enable clients to use pre-tax HSA (Health Savings Account) and FSA (Flexible Spending Account) funds for dynamic fitness class packages and memberships.

Truemed’s partnership with Barry’s allows clients with HSA/FSA accounts to allocate these funds towards Barry’s fitness programs. This is facilitated through a Letter of Medical Necessity, which outlines how a fitness intervention can help reverse or prevent specific conditions. Truemed ensures that this process is smooth, compliant, and hassle-free for clients. “The program is available to all clients with access to a HSA/FSA account, and Truemed provides all the necessary information and support to ensure a smooth, compliant, and hassle-free process,” says Mares.

“95% of all medical costs occur after we are sick. This is so normalized, most don’t realize how unnecessary it is. True medicine is the antidote,” says Justin Mares, co-founder of Truemed. By promoting exercise and supplements as the best medicines, Truemed is steering the focus towards preventive health measures that can reduce the incidence of chronic diseases.

Dr. Mark Hyman, Truemed’s advisor, highlights the potential impact of this initiative: “If exercise was a pill, it would be the biggest blockbuster medication of all time.” This sentiment echoes the growing recognition of fitness as a critical component of healthcare.

This partnership aligns with broader efforts within the fitness industry to advocate for policy changes that recognize and support preventive health measures. The PHIT (Personal Health Investment Today) Act is one such legislative effort, aimed at expanding the use of pre-tax medical accounts to cover physical activity expenses. By including fitness memberships, exercise classes, and equipment in HSA and FSA eligible expenses, the PHIT Act seeks to incentivize healthier lifestyles and reduce long-term healthcare costs.
