Pickleball's surge in popularity across the U.S. has not only brought more players to the game but has also led health clubs and gyms to add pickleball courts to their offerings, meeting the growing demand. However, with this increase in popularity comes a significant rise in associated injuries, particularly fractures among players. A recent study highlighted at the 2024 meeting of orthopedic experts found that injuries from playing pickleball have seen a dramatic increase, with fractures rising 90-fold over the last 20 years. This uptick in injuries is most pronounced among players aged 60 to 69.

The study, spearheaded by Yasmine Ghattas, a medical student, offers the first in-depth analysis of fractures related to pickleball. By examining injury reports from 2002 to 2022, the research revealed that older women, particularly those over 65, are the most likely to suffer injuries, often from falls, hinting at a greater risk due to potentially weaker bones. On the other hand, men, while less frequently injured, tend to suffer more severe injuries that are more likely to require hospital admission.

Kurt P. Spindler, an orthopedic surgeon, pointed out the risks associated with pickleball, even though it's often seen as a low-impact sport. He emphasized the importance of players, especially those at greater risk of bone issues like osteoporosis, consulting with their doctors on how to prevent injuries. Recommendations include increasing intake of bone-strengthening nutrients like calcium and Vitamin D and participating in weight-bearing activities to build bone density.

As pickleball continues to grow, with an 11.5% average annual increase in players over the last five years and more health clubs and gyms incorporating pickleball courts, this study's findings are crucial. They underscore the need for increased safety awareness and preventive measures to protect players from injuries. This ensures that everyone can enjoy the benefits of the sport while minimizing the risks, making the game safer and more enjoyable for its expanding community.
