In recent years, North America has witnessed a remarkable surge in pickleball's popularity. This week, the 2023 State of Pickleball: Participation & Infrastructure Report, a collaborative effort between Pickleheads and The Sports & Fitness Industry Association (SFIA), takes center stage, offering a thorough analysis that underscores the sport's rapid rise.

The report underscores the urgent need for expanded infrastructure to meet the demands of pickleball enthusiasts. Illinois, in particular, faces a formidable task ahead. To accommodate the surging demand over the next 5-7 years, the state must embark on the construction of 909 new courts, with an estimated cost totaling $31.8 million. Presently, Illinois falls below the national average, boasting just 0.80 dedicated pickleball courts per 10,000 people, ranking 38th in the nation.

Brandon Mackie, Co-founder and COO of Pickleheads, underscores the magnitude of this challenge, stating, "Pickleball's unprecedented growth in Illinois necessitates a substantial investment. Our estimates indicate that the state will need to allocate $31.8 million toward court construction over the next 5-7 years. This presents an exciting opportunity for both public and private enterprises in Illinois.”

The pickleball phenomenon is not confined to the United States alone. In Canada, the sport has witnessed remarkable growth. According to data from Pickleball Canada, 11 percent of Canadian households now report at least one household member participating in pickleball, with over 1.3 million people engaging in the sport at least once a month. A noteworthy trend has been the surge in female participation, which increased by nearly 50 percent in the 12-month period ending January 2023.

Efforts are underway to cater to this expanding demographic while simultaneously creating more space for pickleball enthusiasts. Initiatives like the utilization of vacant mall spaces, such as the Cloverdale Mall in Etobicoke, by fairgrounds, demonstrate the commitment to expanding the game's reach.

The figures speak for themselves - pickleball has become a force to be reckoned with in the world of sports. The Sports & Fitness Industry Association reports an astounding 159 percent increase in pickleball participation over three years, soaring to 8.9 million players in 2022. This resounding success is a testament to the sport's universal appeal and accessibility.
