Noom is taking a new step in weight loss innovation by introducing oral medications to its Noom Med program, starting with Metformin. Known for its long-standing use in managing type 2 diabetes, Metformin is now being offered off-label by Noom to aid weight loss, making it a cost-effective alternative for individuals seeking non-injectable solutions. This expansion reflects Noom’s broader mission to provide accessible and personalized health tools that support sustainable lifestyle changes.
The Noom Med program with Metformin will start at $29 for the first month, followed by $89 per month on a three-month recurring subscription plan. The medication will be provided in a 500mg daily tablet, with dosing tailored to promote weight loss. Noom doctors will assess a patient’s clinical eligibility through a medical intake review, and once approved, the medication will be shipped within seven days.
Metformin is an FDA-approved drug that has been used for over 50 years to manage type 2 diabetes. It is now being prescribed off-label for weight loss due to its ability to suppress appetite and improve insulin sensitivity. According to Dr. Adonis Saremi, Chief Medical Officer at Noom, the drug increases levels of a molecule linked to reduced hunger, similar to the effect of vigorous exercise. “Metformin also helps stabilize blood sugar, normalize insulin levels, and burn fat, all of which contribute to weight loss,” Saremi explained.
The addition of Metformin to the Noom Med program is intended to complement Noom’s broader weight loss ecosystem, which includes behavior-focused tools and coaching. “This product is about more than a pill. It represents lasting change,” said Noom CEO Geoff Cook. “By combining medication with behavior change, patients are more likely to experience early success, stick with the program, and turn new habits into permanent lifestyle changes. Offering oral medications like Metformin provides a meaningful weight loss treatment option at a lower price.”
Noom’s approach also seeks to address the needs of those who prefer oral medications over injectable treatments, such as GLP-1 medications. Cook noted that Metformin is an option for individuals with a lower BMI (<27) or those transitioning off GLP-1 treatments. “We want to provide affordable, accessible choices that empower everyone, everywhere, to live better longer,” he added.
In addition to medication, Noom Med provides a comprehensive suite of features, including asynchronous telehealth consultations, access to care coordinators, Noom Weight programming, premium one-on-one coaching, and medication fulfillment through partner pharmacies. The program is further enhanced by Noom’s Medication Companion with Muscle Defense™.
Metformin is now available to eligible new members, and Noom plans to roll it out as an upgrade for current Noom Weight members in early 2025.
