In recent years, the use of GLP-1 receptor agonists has seen a significant rise as a tool in the fight against obesity. Originally developed to treat Type 2 diabetes, medications like Ozempic®, Wegovy®, Mounjaro®, and Rybelsus® have gained popularity for their weight loss benefits. According to a May 2024 survey by the Kaiser Family Foundation, approximately one in eight adults in the United States report having used a GLP-1 agonist. The share increases to one in five among those who have been diagnosed as overweight or obese in the past five years.

The growing demand for these medications is reflective of the broader obesity epidemic. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that over 40% of American adults are obese, with another 30% classified as overweight. As more individuals seek solutions for weight loss, GLP-1 medications have emerged as a promising option. These drugs work by mimicking the effects of a natural hormone that regulates appetite, leading to reduced food intake and, subsequently, weight loss.

However, experts emphasize that these medications should not be viewed as a standalone solution. While effective, they are most beneficial when combined with lifestyle changes, including exercise and a balanced diet. This approach helps to ensure that patients not only lose weight but also maintain muscle mass and improve their overall health.

Amid this backdrop, Echelon has entered the weight management space with the launch of its new division, ActiveMD. This initiative is designed to provide comprehensive wellness support by integrating GLP-1 medications with personalized fitness and nutrition programs.

“We are focused on integrating healthcare into our business so that we create a holistic approach to health and wellness, supporting customer needs throughout their journey,” said Lou Lentine, CEO of Echelon Fitness. “Weight loss has become a significant component of managing overall wellness.”

ActiveMD offers customers access to licensed physicians who can oversee weight management programs that include the use of GLP-1 medications. The division also aims to support immune system function and metabolism through additional wellness services like B12 injections and personalized nutrition plans.

Dr. Tzvi Doron, a board-certified family physician involved in the program, highlighted the importance of combining these medications with strength training. “Pairing GLP-1 weight loss with resistance training can help maintain muscle mass and maximize health benefits. Our programs are designed to complement these medications, helping individuals achieve their weight loss goals while preserving muscle strength,” he said.

To incentivize customers, Echelon is offering exclusive benefits for its members, such as discounts on GLP-1 prescriptions and a complimentary one-year FitPass membership for new participants. This membership includes access to a wide range of live and on-demand fitness classes, with the aim to support a holistic approach to health.
