Eli Lilly has announced that Zepbound® (tirzepatide) 2.5 mg and 5 mg single-dose vials are now available for self-pay patients with an on-label prescription. These vials are offered at a 50% or greater discount compared to the list prices of other GLP-1 medications for obesity, aiming to increase accessibility for patients who need to self-pay outside of insurance.

The new self-pay option is available through LillyDirect, a direct-to-consumer platform. According to Eli Lilly, this approach helps ensure patients receive genuine medication while addressing the rising demand for Zepbound. "These new vials not only help us meet the high demand for our obesity medicine, but also broaden access for patients seeking a safe and effective treatment option," said Patrik Jonsson, executive vice president, and president of Lilly Cardiometabolic Health and Lilly USA.

A four-week supply of the 2.5 mg vial is priced at $399, while the 5 mg vial is $549. These prices align with the Zepbound savings program, designed for individuals without insurance coverage.

Clinical studies have shown that the 5 mg dose of tirzepatide, when combined with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, leads to an average weight loss of 15% over 72 weeks. Zepbound is also available in single-dose pens with various dosage options, catering to different patient needs.

As with any medication, it is important for individuals to consult with a healthcare professional before considering the use of Zepbound or any other GLP-1 medications. These treatments are prescribed based on specific medical criteria, and a healthcare provider can determine whether they are appropriate for an individual's health needs, including potential risks and side effects.

The fitness industry has been increasingly engaged with the implications of GLP-1 medications, particularly as these treatments become more accessible. Known side effects, such as muscle loss, have prompted fitness professionals to focus on integrating exercise and strength training programs for individuals using these medications. With broader access to weight loss treatments, there is potential for more people to seek support from fitness facilities, emphasizing the importance of comprehensive health management that includes both medical and physical activity interventions.
