A new global study on sleep quality has revealed just how much rest people are losing and the numbers are staggering. The largest sleep report ever conducted, published by IKEA, surveyed over 55,000 people across 57 markets and found that people worldwide are missing out on an average of 1 hour and 20 minutes of sleep per night. That adds up to more than 20 full days of lost sleep each year. While Mainland China leads in sleep quality, Norway and the USA rank the lowest, highlighting a growing sleep crisis that impacts health, productivity, and overall well-being.

While those in Mainland China report getting more than seven hours of sleep per night on average, Americans and Norwegians struggle with disrupted rest. Egypt stands out as the country where people feel most satisfied with their sleep, with 64% rating it as good. Across many regions, financial stress, excessive screen time, and inconsistent sleep routines are major barriers to quality rest.

The study identifies several key reasons why people struggle with sleep. Forty percent cite stress and overthinking as their main sleep disruptors. Seventy-two percent use phones in bed, increasing to 86 percent among 18- to 24-year-olds. Nineteen percent rely on medication, with five percent using it daily.

The report also highlights disparities in sleep quality. Financial instability, being part of the LGBTQ+ community, and caring for young children all contribute to lower-than-average sleep scores.

With sleep playing a crucial role in physical and mental health, fitness businesses have an opportunity to step up. Exercise is one of the most effective natural sleep aids, helping to regulate circadian rhythms, reduce stress, and improve overall sleep quality. Gyms and wellness centers can integrate recovery-focused programs, sleep education workshops, and tailored fitness plans to help members improve their sleep habits.

As more people recognize the importance of quality rest, fitness businesses that align themselves with holistic health strategies including sleep will be better positioned to serve their communities and create long term member engagement.
