Wearable devices are playing an increasing role in healthcare, and ŌURA is continuing to develop its presence in the space with the appointment of Ricky Bloomfield, MD, as Chief Medical Officer. With a background in digital health and clinical informatics, Dr. Bloomfield will guide the company’s healthcare strategy, focusing on regulatory compliance, product development, and expanding partnerships in the medical field.
Dr. Bloomfield joins ŌURA from Apple, where he served as Clinical and Health Informatics Lead and played a role in launching Apple’s Health Records feature for iPhone and iPad. Prior to that, he was Director of Mobile Technology Strategy at Duke University Health System, where he worked on improving health data interoperability. At Duke, he led efforts to implement one of the first APIs on an Epic-based electronic health record using the FHIR standard, aimed at improving access to health data for patients, clinicians, and researchers. He also contributed to a large-scale app-based autism research study and worked as a hospitalist in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics.
“We’re thrilled that Dr. Bloomfield is joining our team to help drive and scale our healthcare innovation," said Dorothy Kilroy, Chief Commercial Officer at ŌURA. "We have ambitious goals this year, and his expertise will help us refine our vision and dismantle the challenges that exist when breaking into established industries like healthcare. His experience in data interoperability and standardization will set the stage for Oura’s next chapter, and his leadership will be invaluable as we work to provide personalized health insights to everyone from seniors to busy parents, and collaborate with payors and clinicians to redefine standards for personalized care.”
Dr. Bloomfield highlighted the potential of wearable technology in addressing healthcare challenges. “As we confront the impending physician shortage and the critical need for proactive healthcare, wearable technology represents a transformative solution—one that must be grounded in rigorous science, universally accessible, and designed to empower patients with actionable health insights," he said. "With the timing of AI advancements, growing consumer interest, and Oura’s market positioning, I’m confident that this team has all of the essential ingredients to significantly impact the future of healthcare."
The appointment follows a series of healthcare-related initiatives by ŌURA. In October 2024, the company announced a partnership with Essence Healthcare, a provider of Medicare Advantage plans. In November 2024, ŌURA secured an investment from Dexcom, a company specializing in glucose biosensing, to expand its offerings in metabolic health. More recently, in February 2025, ŌURA was named a leading wearable partner for Lumeris’ AI-powered Primary Care as a Service™ platform, “Tom™.”
Now, the company is broadening its consumer reach with the launch of Oura Ring 4 on Costco.com.
“Costco’s reputation for delivering exceptional value on premium products makes them an integral partner in expanding access to Oura’s advanced health technology,” said Doug Sweeny, Chief Marketing Officer at Oura. “Costco also has an extremely diverse and loyal customer base with unique health needs, including families, fitness enthusiasts, tech-savvy individuals, and more. This collaboration provides a powerful, global platform to help us reach more individuals and empower them to take control of their health using Oura’s comprehensive data and insights.”
Oura’s strategic retail expansion reflects a commitment to making its advanced health technology more accessible to individuals at every stage of life. By forging partnerships with major retailers like Costco, Oura is broadening its reach beyond direct-to-consumer channels to include familiar retail environments. This growth simplifies the path to proactive wellness, allowing individuals to manage their health journey with greater ease, no matter what their goals may be.
ŌURA states that the Oura Ring is designed to provide personalized health insights for both consumers and clinicians. Through the Oura App, users can access real-time and long-term health data to support informed discussions with healthcare providers. The company continues to explore ways to integrate wearable technology into medical applications while navigating regulatory and industry standards.
