As GLP-1 weight-loss drugs like Wegovy and Ozempic become increasingly prominent, even endorsed by figures such as Oprah Winfrey, a new survey highlights the preferences of U.S. adults when it comes to weight-loss methods. The survey, conducted by the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine and Morning Consult, reveals a growing divide between those favoring traditional approaches like diet changes and those more open to newer pharmaceutical options.
Despite the rapid rise of GLP-1 injectables, 62% of U.S. adults still prefer making dietary changes over taking a weight-loss drug. This preference is particularly strong among older adults, with 73% of those aged 65 and older favoring diet changes over injectable medications. Additionally, adults with postgraduate degrees and those with household incomes exceeding $100,000 are more likely to reject the use of injectables, further solidifying the preference for more conventional approaches among these groups.
However, younger adults show a notable openness to GLP-1 drugs. Among respondents aged 35-44, only 46% indicated a preference for diet changes, signaling that Millennials and Gen Z are more inclined to explore pharmaceutical options for weight loss. This generational shift suggests that GLP-1 drugs are becoming increasingly accepted as an effective alternative for those seeking quicker results.
The survey also reveals demographic and regional trends. Urban residents and Democrats are more likely to express interest in GLP-1 injectables compared to their suburban, rural, and Republican counterparts. Though dietary changes remain the dominant preference for weight loss across the board, GLP-1 injectables are gaining traction, particularly among those in urban areas and younger age groups.
Interestingly, 57% of U.S. adults say they would be open to trying new methods if they learned it could result in significant weight loss, highlighting the growing potential for GLP-1 medications. While traditional approaches like dietary changes remain popular, the increasing acceptance of injectables among younger adults reflects a notable shift in preferences.
The findings suggest that while most Americans continue to favor diet changes for weight loss, the rising prominence of GLP-1 drugs is changing the narrative—especially among younger generations. As weight-loss strategies continue to diversify, fitness industry leaders and healthcare providers may need to adjust their approaches to align with evolving consumer interests.
