In a groundbreaking survey commissioned by ukactive and conducted by Savanta, a remarkable shift in the motivations driving UK adults to exercise has been revealed. With responses from 2,271 participants, the study sheds light on a significant change in exercise priorities. Surprisingly, mental health has emerged as the predominant driver, with 54% of respondents citing it as their primary motivation, surpassing the long-standing emphasis on physical appearance at 49%.

What's even more astonishing is the widespread misunderstanding of recommended physical activity levels. Despite guidelines from the Chief Medical Officers (CMO) recommending at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity weekly, a staggering 75% of participants underestimated this requirement, with 38% believing that less than 90 minutes of exercise per week suffices.
